As a young child, I remember getting dairy delivered every single day, first in glass bottles with alfoil lids that chickens used to peck through and then in the brand new fangled tetra packs. I remember the “milko”, who was usually a surfer while he had the remainder of your day off, coming by at the conclusion of the week to get his payment from Mum. Not that I’d tell my mom but those dairy containers, specifically the neighbour’s, sure came in handy on those morning returns from the night before. I always remember if you didn’t get up early enough and it was a warm sunny day, the milk wasn’t worth drinking after 3 hours on the front step.In the day, that was considered the peak of comfort and when they included the baker doing a bakery function we wondered if it might get any better. We knew the providers by name and the relationship was so that the casual late fee or a request extra buns was all drawn in stride, after all they knew where we lived. Then corner stores with interesting American labels got more prolific, the “servo’ started selling milk and before we knew it, benefit meant walking to the corner or getting to the car to attend the mall because the “milko” and his bread bearing mate were out of employment. Where did they go? Are they still at the seaside waiting on a to come back?I am all for convenience, actually I’ve only moved into a condo above an underground shopping center, but there clearly was a loss in connection with the folks we used to work face to face. Are we lacking that?So isn’t it interesting that Aussie Farmers Direct, are working towards daily delivery of milk and bread to families? With 55,000 buyers in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane I will see the huge “milko” doing the rounds with his surfboard in the back of the vehicle. Everything old is new again!Of program the technology necessary to attempt effortlessly has increased and no question, you can order online if not via your iPhone, no matter where and when you desperately need some milk property delivered. Is this the start of something? What else could we expect? Think about house calls from the physician, investments people really showing up at your house or someone to send your fuel and clean your windows? Think about support with a smile?Technology can achieve great things but often people can not be just replaced by it and I’ll surely be giving the local “milko” a large wave when I see him next. I simply do not understand how he’s likely to reach my door via the different protection gates in my house complex? Is nostalgia another great innovation?
